Want to exchange links and/or banners? Just let me know.

"link exchange" or "reciprocal link" provides a way to
increase traffic to your site.

Imagine that you're interested in breeding discus fish and you're surfing a site
devoted to the subject. You'd probably explore links to other discus fish sites if
they were there.  Now imagine that your link is on this site ... some of my visitors
will end up at your site. The downside is of course that you'll  have to provide
my link on your site, but it's now generally accepted that the advantage of getting
more hits outweighs the disadvantage of bringing your visitors in contact with a
competitor. What's the point of having a site if it can't be found?

Banner or description?
A banner attracts more attention but it will cause your pages to load slower
because it consumes more memory. Besides, you might not have a banner.

How to exchange links with this site?

You must be able to publish your site, to publish you need an internet
connection, your password and software to upload files (ftp). If you can't
publish yourself contact your webmaster and ask him to do it.

If you work with an editor (FrontPage, pagemill...)
1. copy the banner or the description and paste it in your site. Make sure

the banner is linked to http://www.engelen.com/index.htm or
2. download (right click-save image as) the banner, insert it in your site

    and link it to http://www.engelen.com/index.htm.
3. publish your changes

banner:
baneng.jpg (12607 bytes)

description:
Leon Engelen Oil Paintings: photographically detailed landscape and animal oil paintings, using classical techniques. The site offers a valuable painting course, as well as an extensive virtual gallery.

If you work with raw html
1. copy the banner or description code and paste it in your site or
2. download the banner and change the content of the < img src> tag
3. publish your changes

banner:
<p align="center"><a href="http://www.engelen.com/index.htm">
<img src="http://www.engelen.com/images/baneng.jpg" width="401"
height="69" alt="baneng.jpg (11684 bytes)"></a></p>

description:
<p align="left"><big><a href="http://www.engelen.com/index.htm">Leon
Engelen Oil Paintings:</a> photographically detailed landscape and
animal oil paintings, using classical techniques. The site offers a
valuable painting course, as well as an extensive virtual gallery.<big>
</big></big></p>

You're not familiar with the concepts of linking, html,
editor, banner? Read this:

linking: every page on the world wide web has its unique location starting with
http:// this is the URL. The world wide web  is called "web" because you can jump
from one URL to another using links. Links provide the possibility to jump to
another URL by clicking text ->description(generally blue) or an image ->banner.

html: imagine that  everything on the web is plain unformatted text, not very
attractive is it? That's what html is for: to allow your browser to change plain text
into an attractive web page. An example: if you want to increase font size
text between the tags <big>increase font size</big> will have an increased font.

Editor: there are two ways to create html
-in raw html: type text and tags in a basic word processor (like WordPad), save

the file as an htm or html file and open it in your browser.
-using an editor: an editor is a browser that allows you to edit the content, your

input is "translated" into html. The advantage is that you don't have to know all
the tags.

Banner:
A banner is a show-case for your site. It should advertise your site and make
clear that it is linked to your site. A banner is a graphic (jpg or gif), that can be
animated, of about 10K. The default size is 60 x 468 pixels.  It is easy to make, I
copied a part of a scan, and added some words.
If you decide to exchange banners there are two ways to insert my banner in
your site:
- just copy the code. Your visitors will have to download the banner from my
site, this takes more time but limits the size of your web.
-download the banner. Your visitors can download the banner directly from your
site, this is faster but will increase the size of your web. If you have lots of links
downloading is recommended.

where to put your links?
If you have lots of links a special page is best. If you have few links, they can be
inserted wherever you like (e.g. index, personal info page,...)

Still don't get it?
Ask a friend to explain and demonstrate or mail me.

The importance of exchanging links has increased since I've wrote this. I've copied an article on the subject:

The Essential Do's and Don'ts of Link Popularity
InternetDay.Com
Author: Paul Fisher Monday, December 10, 2001

Anyone involved with search engine marketing will know that link popularity has become central to most crawler-based search engine ranking systems. Search providers Google and AltaVista have been particularly vocal about their individual scoring methods, which can give us an insight as to how we can improve our own link popularity without accidentally getting our site blacklisted.

Advice on improving link popularity is usually lumped in with general search engine optimisation, and is sketchy to say the least. The importance of links to the Internet, and how to improve link popularity scores is a highly specialized subject that deserves debate in its own right. Below I have provided a broad introduction to the subject, which I have condensed into nine essential points. This list of link popularity do's and don'ts cover everything a Webmaster should know in order to achieve greater search engine rankings.

1. Set aside an hour a week to search for out sites related to your own (non-competitive of course) and request a link. You'd be surprised how many Webmasters will be more than happy to do this -- even big sites. Try to get the link included within some text about your site. Be cheeky and suggest the text in a reply e-mail, making sure to include your most important keywords. Many Webmasters will use this text instead of taking the time to write their own summary. Find possible sites by using the same keywords you that describe your site. The search engines already consider these sites to be important, and a link from them will gain more credit than from other sites.

2. If applicable, join a Web ring of associated sites. Services such as Yahoo! Webring (http://www.webring.org) allow you to join groups of related sites. If you have any other domains, link them together with a descriptive link.

3. Dedicate areas of your site for outbound links, which are also an important factor in calculating link popularity. Link to high-quality, related sites. Pick some that are highly ranked for your particular keywords. You might wonder why you should add to their popularity, but believe me when I say you will benefit more from the relationship.

4. If possible get a listing on the big directories, namely Yahoo!, LookSmart and the Open Directory. These listings will significantly boost link popularity.

5. Submit your site to crawler-based search engines after you have secured links on other sites and directories. This will help to boost your popularity score.

6. Avoid link popularity software programs. AltaVista and Google are publicly trying to blacklist any site using such programs. If you do decide to use them, check them out first. Ask them what the major search engines think and doublecheck their answers with the search engines themselves.

7. Be skeptical if an SEO company offers to improve your link popularity. Ask them how they will achieve this, bearing in mind all of the points outlined here. Will they carefully research your market and request the addition of links on related sites? Will they use link farms (either third party or their own)? Or will they use a standardized link page?

8) Be wary of search engine submission services that offer to submit your site to thousands of search sites. There are only a hundred or so search engines worth being listed on at the most. Most of the others will be link farms that could act negatively on your link popularity score.

9. Use crawler-based search engines and specific sites such as www.linkpopularity.com to carefully monitor who is linking to your site, and the quality of those links. If you think the text surrounding a link could be improved, try suggesting it in a tactful e-mail. If a link is negative, politely ask for its removal.

You need to be as interested in how your site connects to others as you are in what's actually on the site itself. The Internet was founded on the linking of related information, and this remains the lifeblood of the modern World Wide Web. Cultivate your links, and in doing so you will carve a place for your site on the Internet. Imagine there are no search engines, and that visitors will only find your site through referrals from other sites. If you learn to see Web site marketing in this light, then you have truly unearthed the secret of link popularity and your search engine positioning will be massively improved.
